Frequently Asked Questions

Downs fluffability When you receive BeddingCo’s quilt please note that as it is completely new it has been compressed to fit in a small sized box package and it has not yet been fluffed. Before using your new quilt you will need to shake it to get air into the down clusters and thus make it fluffier. To keep your quilt in perfect condition, and guard against stains, use a quilt cover/protector. Your quilt should be fluffed daily – this allows the down to reloft and redistribute the fill. Regular fluffing will provide better insulation and prolong the life of your quilt. If you shake and turn your quilt every week, and air it outside (not in direct sunlight) once a month, your bedding should stay fresh in-between cleaning times. How long do I have to wait for my bedding items to arrive? We send our bedding products using Registered Australia Post within 1-2 days of receiving payment or your payment clearing. Please allow up to 2-8 working days for delivery, however usually it is much faster. If your item has not arrived please contact us and we will provide you with your tracking number and you will be able to go to the Australia Post website to www.ausposttracking.com.au and track your purchase. Can I use an electric blanket in combination with my overlay? Yes you can. Just place your electric blanket on top of the overlay and under your sheet as normal. (Remember it is not recommended to leave an electric blanket on whilst you are asleep). How do I clean my quilt? Cleaning of your quilt should be required only very infrequently. You can hand wash or (if you have access to one) machine wash your quilt separately, in a large capacity washer. Use warm water (temperature 40 degrees) and mild detergent on delicate (do not bleach). Make sure it is thoroughly rinsed before drying on low in a large capacity dryer and never iron. If you do decide to wash your quilt in large capacity washing machine please ensure it is dried as thoroughly as possible. This is best done by drying on low for a period of time and occasionally taking the quilt out and fluffing it. This will ensure that no odour is left as wet down can smell no matter how clean it is. Alternatively you can leave it out to dry and air in the sun which should also eliminate any odours. Alternatively you can have your down quilt professionally dry-cleaned. Although this way will ensure your quilt comes back thick and fluffy, please note that repeatedly dry-cleaning your quilt can slowly break down the filling (due to the chemicals used) as they dry out the natural oils in the feather and down. Therefore as mentioned cleaning of your quilt should be done only very infrequently. Please note that the fill power of down may diminish as the down gets dirty and mats however it can be restored by washing the article as above. Tennis balls can be added to help fluff up the down. Why are BeddingCo’s quilts comparatively low priced compared to those sold in retail shops? There are a few reasons why our quilts are significantly cheaper compared to those sold in retail shops. In summary: • We sell directly from the manufacturer and as no middleman is involved we are able to cut out retail costs where retail stores can have a mark up of more than 300%. BeddingCo saves on these retail costs as we sell directly from a warehouse and do not pay the high cost of shop leasing space. • We buy in bulk so we can pass the savings onto our customers Why can't I find a 100% down quilt in Australia? It is actually very hard to completely extract down from feather hence it is not possible to claim that a product contains 100% pure down. In 2006 the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) cracked down on the leading bedding suppliers for falsely claiming 100% down in their products. Buyers must be wary of sellers advertising their products as 100% down. What is the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100? The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is a global uniform testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production. It tests for harmful substances which are prohibited or regulated by law, chemicals which are known to be harmful to health, and parameters which are included as a precautionary measure to safeguard health. The more intensively a product comes into contact with the skin, the stricter the human ecological requirements it must fulfil. All of BeddingCo’s products are certified by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and have gone through proven extensive laboratory test that all components, including accessories, comply with the specified test criteria without exception. Having the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification means that our customers will have the assurance that all our products are safe to their health and are manufactured to a high quality. It also stands for security when purchasing bedding products. Products with Oeko-Tex label also offer skin friendly properties right from the outset. Independent laboratory tests ensure that bedding do not contact any harmful saubstance in view of the fact that they are subjected to intensive use, have a long lifespan and undergo comparatively infrequent care cycles. You can buy with confidence when you buy from BeddingCo. For more information go to http://www.oeko-tex.com What is baffle boxed construction? Baffle boxes are internal three-dimensional fabric wall boxes which help maintain even distribution within the boxes, minimise migration of the fill and allow maximum comfort and support. The internal baffle walls provide height between the top and bottom casing. This gap ensures the down filling can expand right up to the edges of the cassette providing maximum insulation without being restricted. If a down quilt did not have this and instead had the top cover of the quilt sewn directly on the bottom cover this can create tiny holes for the warm air to escape causing cold spots. Baffle boxed construction is found in all of BeddingCo’s down quilts and helps prevent cold spots and the down from moving. What is fill power? Fill power is important in determining the quality of down as it is a measure of the loft or fluffiness of the down product. The more air that is trapped, the better insulation you have, so the higher the fill power the more insulating air pockets the down has and the better the quilt’s insulating ability. If you have a 700 fill power down quilt, this means it will “trap” 700 cubic inches of air. If it is a 550 fill power down quilt, it will only trap 550 cubic inches of air, and will require more fill weight to equal the warmth of the 700 fill power quality. A single ounce of down contains thousands of clusters that trap air to prevent heat loss. Fill power measures the cubic inches one ounce of a given quality of down will occupy. The more cubic inches one ounce occupies, the better the quality of that down. What is the difference between duck and goose down? The main difference between goose and duck down is that geese are larger than ducks and hence goose down clusters are larger than those of ducks, achieving greater warmth for the same weight of filling. Goose down is lighter; holds more air and last longer. What is Down? Down is the fluffy fine layer found underneath the outer features of birds. It has many properties that make it excellent for use in textile products. It draws away and expels excess moisture and heat released by the body. Down clusters have a quill centre but not quill shaft are far more resilient than feathers. They are lighter, three-dimensional and have more loft and fill power. Although down can be packed tightly when compressed a good shake is all a down quilt needs for it to bounce right back to its original fluffy loft. Down clusters are able to trap air between its filaments and provide thermal insulation. It is considered to be one of the best insulators against cold. In addition to its insulating properties, it is also lightweight and conversely cooler in warm weather. These attributes make down very popular filler for quilts. Down bedding and pillows are by far favourites of many discriminating sleepers. Products made with down are lightweight, warm, soft and comfortable. Pillows can be fluffed and re-fluffed to maintain comfort and stay cool while sleeping. When shopping for down products, check the manufacturers fill rating, which rates the fill power of the product. The higher the number, the better quality fill. Also look for products with tightly woven cotton outer shells to reduce potential allergens that can enter natural down products. All of BeddingCo’s 95% down products have a thread count of 350.
